"..the sham rituals, such as wearing feathers, beating tom-toms, fake dancers, "war whoops" and painted faces found at these sporting events address more than racism. 2007, Jan 10th A Facebook group called “If They Get Rid of the Chief I’m Becoming a Racist" has 110 members...
and who's goal is to save Chief Illiniwek, the mascot at the University of Illinois. There were few posts, and here are two of them:
“[W]hat they don’t realize is that there was never a racist problem before..but now I hate redskins and hope all those drunk casino owning bums die.” (Which apparently goes to show that when a person wants to make a racist statement regarding an indigenous person, they will indeed call them a REDSKIN. Thank you! You have proven a point!)
“I say we throw a tomohawk [sic] into her face.” (referring to one of the students - An American Indian - who is behind changing the Illini mascot)

court, still in costume and grimacing to fight back tears.

Chief Illiniwek performs last dance amid continued controversy

Eighty years of tradition and 17 years of controversy came to an end, or at least to a major milepost, on Feb. 21, when Chief Illiniwek danced for the final time at a UI sporting event.
