It is decided that Shippensburg University logo will now be a ship, and not an Indian Head, although the team will still be called the Red Raiders. The Indian chief logo has been used since the early 1960s.

1987, April 27 - It never makes sense for people to fight hard to keep a racist mascot by saying the mascot isn't that big of a deal...

By that logic, then it isn't a big deal to change it either.. right?

And bravo to the teachers of this student who created a situation where he
believes ignorantly depicting another race for the sole entertainment of a dominant
one is irrelevant. You can teach them that Native people are "brave and proud" - but if
they speak up, their issues aren't as important as others.

Whitehead wrote to the Lehighton School Board who use the name and Indian symbols - which Whitehead wants to change "this passive racism to an end." Lehighton uses an Indian "logo" and a school-spirit tomahawk campaign.  He also said, "Ask your children what an Indian looks like... what they do in our society today and you'll probably have references to tomahawks, tipis, eagle feathers and the like."    ---  Mark Steber, school board president, said "The Indian logo has been a tradition here since the district was formed. I went through the schools and didn't see anything offensive about it."  And "There are a lot bigger issues in education. We're not doing it to insult, but to honor."

2013, November 17 - "scalps high school"... really????

First off, this headline sucks. Really WND Education? What the hell were you thinking?? Scalps?

Second, it's sad when the students have to stand up to the adults and tell to educate them on something that is this offensive.

Congrats kids! All you young grasshoppers have surpassed your teachers!

After recent controversy in Neshaminy High School over the message and sensitivity of the school’s mascot, the “Redskin,” The Spoke decided to look into the role of mascots in high schools, colleges and professional sports. Editors and staff reporters researched mascots from local and national teams and conducted on-the-scene reporting at Neshaminy.
The following report describes the developments at Neshaminy, examines the mascot change at Radnor and looks into the role of the Pioneer at Conestoga. It also explores reactions and changes to American Indian mascots at the local and national levels.

2015, January 21 - The Lancaster Redskins

January 21, 2015 - Buffalonews.com - Redskins nickname is debated in Lancaster. Native Americans object to use by school district, by Karen Robinson. "Of all the words that could be used to describe us, 'Redskin' is the worst," said John Kane, talk show host for the First Voices Indigenous Radio Network. "I can tell you as a native person, it is not appropriate. We represent the offended party."  ... "We have something to offer other than the color of our skin to hang on your doors," he said. "We have a deep, rich history."  Click here to read the entire story.
