1910, April 6th - Louis Sockalexis
Former Potter and old time Cleveland player put in much time together in Maine.
1912, Jan 3. - The Atlanta Braves are really named after white men who played Indian.
The Sandusky Journal 1/3/1912 |
1921, Nov 27th - Boston Braves are named after a man who liked to PLAY Indian - and nothing more.
So... what can we gather from this article?
1. Sportswriters were instrumental in the naming of many sports teams.
2. Boston Braves came from the owner of the team who was a Tammany man (meaning, he liked to dress up and play Indian with his friends).
3. Not a whole lot of thought went into naming some of these teams.
1970, March 8th - A good nickname must reflect the fighting qualities of the school's athletic team.
Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph 3/8/1970 |
"A good nickname must of course reflect the fighting qualities of the school's athletic teams. It should, in fact, be so ferocious sounding that its mere mention throws fear into the hearts of opponents.."
In Texas, in 1970, the common mascots were:
88 - Eagles
87 - Bulldogs
30 - Indians
26 - Bears
22 - Longhorns
So, I assume, this means that Indians were as ferocious as bears and eagles?
