Legal action threatened by schools carrying 'hostile and abusive' nicknames. Starting in February, 2006, any school with a nickname or logo with American Indians will be banned from playing in postseasons events, if they have a racially or ethnically "hostile" or "abusive" image on their uniform. The committee also recommended that the schools refuse to schedule contests against other schools who continue to use the American Indian nicknames, like Wisconsin and Iowa did earlier. Two years ago, the NCAA recommended the schools determine for themselves whether Indian themes were offensive, but not all have changed.
We believe hostile or abusive nicknames "are troubling to use and it can't continue," said committee chairman Walter Harrison. "We're trying to send a message, very strongly, saying that these mascots are not appropriate for NCAA championships."
