April 4, 1999 - The Index Journal - Redskins' trademark protection revoked: A three-member federal trademark panel ruled to revoke the Washington Redskins' federal trademark protection, saying the team's name may disparage American Indians or bring them into disrepute.  "This is one of the last vestiges of overt racism right out in public in America, and it happens on a weekly basis during sports seasons," said Suzan Shown Harjo, one of the petitioners, and president of the Morning State Instritute, an American Indian advocacy group. "This is the worst name you can call Native Americans in the English language."

October 3, 1999 - "Racist images of the American Indian are found not only in toys and books for children," said Elizabeth Rockefeller-MacArthur. "One of the most bigoted images is the Cleveland Indians'  'Chief Wahoo.'  This image depicts a red faced 'Indian' with a big grin and a big nose, complete with a red feather... the portrayal of any other racial or ethic group in this fashion would be be tolerated."
