Wiscasset names road after old school mascot
Three elected officials voted to rename a road "Redskin's Drive," even though the school abandoned the nickname four years earlier. One of them, Ben Rines, said he didn't view the word as disparaging. He also said that he was a Wiscasset Redskin his entire life and, "Our heritage should be respected as much as any others." By that, he meant, the heritage of using the Redskin moniker as a school team name.
Rines also said, "“I didn’t grow up knowing or even thinking that redskin is a bad word. It’s only since the politically correct police come along has it been a bad word. To me, redskin is synonymous with Wiscasset.”
