The letter students received about Joe Raider's fate

Dear Students of Chippewa Intermediate Secondary School:

Student council representatives met with Mr. Kelly Brown this morning to discuss the contentious issue of Joe Raider. As you probably know, there were complaints made about Joe Raider in November and as a Student Council we have been working towards a viable solution since that time. This issue has garnered much media attention. Thus far, we have discussed many options and have developed greater understanding of the multicultural issues surrounding our mascot. We truly feel that our school must be a place where students of all cultures can be educated and feel comfortable.

It has been decided, in conjunction with the NNDSB, that Joe Raider, as he currently exists, will be retired. We hope to work with the student body to create a new spirited mascot that will still embody the pride of all Raiders. We are convinced that the Raiders at Chippewa today can work towards a positive change and an enlightened view of cultures in our community. It is time we embrace the change that is upon us and demonstrate courage and flexibility during this difficult transition. With cooperation from our Raiders we can make a positive impact in our community and school. We will work together to keep that Raider spirit strong just like we have in previous trials. Through this experience we will become stronger individuals and stronger leaders.

Change is inevitable. We must act and react to this situation with understanding while maintaining our proud heritage. Although we value Joe Raider's legacy and the positive influence he has had on students, both past and present, it is time for change. Be part of that change for the better; collaborate on the development and introduction of a new mascot with students council. As student council we are committed to all students as Chippewa Intermediate Secondary and continuing student pride in our school.

Remember, the spirit and pride in this school come from you, the students.

Sincerely,

Chippewa Student Council Advisors
